Dusty Best

Software Engineer

I build software, solve problems, and play well with others. Any stack, any challenge.

About

I'm a software engineer who loves the creative problem-solving that comes with building great digital experiences. Two decades in hospitality taught me that great results come from working well with people, whether that's teammates, clients, or stakeholders.

In 2019, while working at a busy brewery and restaurant, I built a simple Angular app to help my coworkers calculate tips. Seeing it become their go-to tool convinced me it was time to pursue development professionally.

Since then, I've worked across the full spectrum of web development, from crafting React frontends for NIH research applications to building full-stack solutions with Drupal and WordPress. At Wondros, I've contributed to high-impact projects like the Matthew Perry Foundation website and dynamic D3.js dashboards for KPMG, always focusing on solutions that are both technically sound and genuinely useful.

I enjoy working with new technologies and collaborating with talented teams. Whether I'm implementing headless CMS solutions, optimizing search functionality, or creating animated experiences, I focus on building solutions that actually work well for the people who use them.

When I'm not coding, you'll find me playing baseball, traveling to catch games in Japan, or listening to podcasts like Hidden Brain and Darknet Diaries.

Experience

  1. 2021 — 2025

Maintained and enhanced NIH applications with Drupal and React, supporting the All of Us Research Program. Led development of the Matthew Perry Foundation site with Next.js. Built dynamic reporting dashboards with D3.js for KPMG and interactive front-end experiences with GSAP. Implemented AWS infrastructure, automated deployments using CodePipeline and CodeDeploy, and managed SQL databases across multiple environments.

Projects

  • Producer Sportfishing Website

Developed a fully custom WordPress theme tailored for a San Diego-based sportfishing charter. Leveraged Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) to create flexible, user-friendly editable content sections and custom user profiles, enabling the client to easily manage site content without developer intervention. Emphasized maintainability and scalability through structured data modeling and version-controlled development workflows.

  • Interactive Hawaii Tourism Map

Developed an interactive map of Hawaii for an Innovation Day project aimed at supporting a tourism promotion bid. Leveraged D3.js to plot geographic map data and integrated accommodation details from external data sources (e.g., Google Places API via CSV). The map dynamically displays accommodation info on hover, showcasing skills in geospatial visualization, data integration, and user experience design.

  • Interactive Lottie Hover Animations

Explored the use of Lottie animations as interactive UI elements. Designed vector animations in Adobe After Effects and exported them via the Bodymovin plugin for web use. Implemented hover interactions to enhance engagement and performance. One animation was created for a brew pub in Tokyo (Mihama Base), highlighting real-world design collaboration.
